Jack Chipman

Jack Chipman has been collecting, selling, researching and writing about California Pottery for over twenty-five years.

He has had two books on Bauer Pottery published. The first, co-authored with Judy Stangler, was published in 1982. Collector Books published the second, Collector’s Encyclopedia of Bauer Pottery, in 1997. In 1992, his reference guide to the Southern California Ceramic Industry, Collector’s Encyclopedia of California Pottery, also from Collector Books, was released. In 1999 it was updated and expanded into the current Second Edition. He has also written extensively about California Pottery for such publications as The Antique Trader Weekly, The Glaze, and The American Clay Exchange.

More recently (2003) he self-published Barbara Willis: Classic California Modernism. The focus of his latest from Collector Books, California Pottery Scrapbook is the many undocumented sleepers that exist.

Chipman’s "other life" as a fine artist is not so well known. He is a graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts) in Los Angeles, and has exhibited his paintings, collages and assemblages throughout California and abroad. Click for my resume.
